The Victory Ride to Cure Cancer Launch Event in Raleigh

Try combining passionate cyclists, a sense of urgency in the fight against cancer, and Jim Valvano’s famous “Don’t Give Up . . . Don’t Ever Give Up!”® rallying cry. The result? A spectacular launch event, hosted by the V Foundation on September 27 to announce its newest fundraiser, the Victory Ride to Cure Cancer. It was an afternoon celebrating an incredible new cycling event coming to North Carolina.

“It’s the first Victory Ride to Cure Cancer, that’s what we’re here to do,” V Foundation CEO Susan Braun told the crowd. “We are ready to raise money for cancer research here in the state and beyond. We want everybody to come out and join us.”

The inaugural Victory Ride will take place on Saturday, May 19. The ride features several different ride length options for participants to choose from: 100 miles, 60 miles, 30 miles, family ride (1 mile) and a virtual ride. The ride will start and finish at NC State University’s Centennial Campus, with the different routes going throughout the Triangle.

ABC11’s Diane Wilson provided a live broadcast from the launch party that featured the three Victory Ride mission partners — Duke Cancer Institute, UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and Wake Forest Baptist Health Comprehensive Cancer Center. These cancer centers, and others nationwide, will benefit from the funds raised from the ride.

“We as the state of North Carolina are very fortunate in having three outstanding NCI designated cancer centers in the state … and we have all three as our partners in this event,” Braun explained.

At the event, guests were invited to climb aboard several stationary bikes and begin their ride training. A group of cyclists also made a symbolic ride around the restaurant to mark the first miles logged in the Victory Ride’s ultimate goal — victory over cancer.
